What Happens at an IID Calibration Appointment?

What Happens at an IID Calibration Appointment?

Why the Visit Exists

Your ignition interlock is a precision fuel-cell instrument, and its sensor drifts over time. Florida requires regular service - every 30 days - to keep readings accurate and your data valid. At each visit the technician verifies the device against a known alcohol standard, downloads your data log for reporting to the FLHSMV, and inspects the installation for tampering. For the bigger picture on frequency and consequences, see our calibration overview. This post is about the appointment itself.

Before You Arrive

A little preparation makes the visit fast:

  • Bring the vehicle the device is installed in - calibration happens on the installed unit, not a handset you carry in
  • Bring a valid ID and any paperwork your provider asked for at installation
  • Watch the countdown - your device warns you days ahead; book as soon as the reminder appears
  • Write down anything odd - a failed test you believe was mouthwash, a battery issue, a warning message. Context in your file matters if the FLHSMV ever reviews your record
  • Don't disconnect anything yourself - a wire you adjusted on your own can read as a tamper flag

The Appointment, Step by Step

A typical visit looks like this:

  1. Check in - the technician confirms your account and where you are in your cycle
  2. Data download - your log of tests, retests, and any events is pulled for reporting to the FLHSMV
  3. Verification - the device is tested against a known alcohol standard and recalibrated if the reading has drifted
  4. Inspection - a quick look at the handset, wiring, and connections for damage or tampering
  5. Schedule your next visit - leave with your next date set, not a vague idea of next month

It's closer to a dental cleaning than a repair appointment - routine, quick, and mostly painless.

How Long It Takes and What It Costs

Plan for 15 to 20 minutes - most visits run shorter once you're a regular. If the device needs recalibration or your log shows an event worth discussing, allow a few extra minutes.

On cost: calibration processing is included in your plan - no per-visit charge - and covers the reporting side of every visit. Your plan total is published on our pricing page. What actually gets expensive is missing the appointment entirely - a skipped calibration can lock the device and be reported as non-compliance.

If Your Log Shows Something

Occasionally the download surfaces an event - a failed test, a missed retest, a low-battery flag. Don't panic, and don't argue at the counter. The technician will tell you what the event is; your job is to give context - what you used, ate, or did - so it can be noted in your file. One explained, isolated event reads very differently from a pattern. If you're worried about how an event looks on your record, our post on what counts as a violation explains how reviews work.

After the Visit

Before you pull out of the lot, confirm three things: your next appointment is booked, the device powers up and tests normally, and you have the center's number saved in your phone. Then treat the next date as immovable - add a reminder a week ahead. If anything behaves oddly between visits - strange readings, warning messages, a battery issue - call support right away instead of waiting for the next appointment. Small problems reported early stay small.

Making Every Visit Easy

Calibration is only a hassle when it's far away or unplanned. Book recurring appointments at the same time each cycle, pick the center closest to your commute, and combine the trip with errands. Florida IID has 27 service centers across the state - our Orlando headquarters plus partner centers from Pensacola to Homestead - so most drivers have one on their route. Find your nearest location or book your calibration online.
