When Is an IID Required?

Florida law requires ignition interlock devices for many DUI convictions. The court or DHSMV will specify whether you must install a device and for how long.

You may also need an IID to qualify for a hardship license, which allows limited driving while your regular license is suspended.

Duration

How Long Will You Need an IID?

To obtain a hardship license in Florida, you generally need to: complete DUI school enrollment, obtain FR-44 insurance, apply at a DHSMV service center, pay the hardship fee, and install an approved IID.

1Serve any mandatory hard suspension period imposed by the court or DHSMV.
2Enroll in or complete Florida DUI school.
3Obtain FR-44 or SR-22 insurance through a licensed Florida provider.
4Install a state-approved ignition interlock device.
5Submit a hardship license application to your local DHSMV administrative review office.
6Pay required reinstatement and administrative fees.

Insurance note: Most hardship licenses require FR-44 insurance, which carries higher liability limits than standard coverage. Confirm the exact certificate with your insurer before visiting the DHSMV.
