IID Installation at Home vs. at a Shop: Which Is Right for You?

First, What Does Not Change
Start with the part that surprises people: there is no compliance difference between an in-shop and an at-home installation. The device is the same state-approved unit, the certificate of installation is the same document, and the FLHSMV receives the same report either way. A judge reviewing your case cannot tell where the install happened, and would have no reason to care. So the choice is purely about logistics - which is good news, because logistics is the part of this program you actually control.
When the Service Center Wins
A shop visit is the right call when getting there is easy. If one of our 27 Florida service centers is a short drive away and someone can legally get the car there, the center gives you a covered bay (worth something in a July thunderstorm), a waiting area, and a team that installs these devices all day. Many of our centers are working repair and audio shops, so you can pair the visit with other work your car needs - a brake check, a battery test before the device goes in, whatever the car has been putting off.
When Mobile Installation Wins
Mobile wins whenever the trip itself is the problem:
- You cannot legally drive yet. The device has to be installed before your hardship license is valid - so who drives the car to the shop? With mobile installation, nobody has to
- The car is in impound. We install at the yard, and the car leaves compliant
- Your work schedule will not bend. The technician comes to your workplace lot while you keep earning
- Distance. If the nearest center is an hour away, a technician who drives that hour instead of you is the better deal
- Several vehicles. One household, multiple cars that need devices - one mobile visit handles the lot
What Each Option Asks of You
The shop asks one thing: get the vehicle there, legally. That usually means a licensed friend or family member drives your car in.
Mobile asks for three things: a safe, legal parking spot (a driveway, a workplace lot with permission, or the storage yard), your keys, and you present for the walkthrough and paperwork. You also get text updates while your technician is on the way, with a live arrival estimate, so the visit does not eat your whole morning.
What About the Price Difference?
We do not publish rate cards, and any provider quoting you a price before hearing your situation is guessing. What we do instead: you tell our sales team which service you want - center or mobile - and you get one written quote that covers everything for that choice. The number you see is the number you pay. Talk to sales and compare for yourself.
The Honest Recommendation
If someone can legally get your car to a nearby center, either option serves you equally - pick whichever fits your week. If nobody can, stop planning around the problem: request a mobile installation or call (833) 356-7443 and we will bring the install to the car. Not sure what your case requires in the first place?
