FR-44 vs. SR-22 Insurance in Florida

FR-44 vs. SR-22 Insurance in Florida

What is an SR-22?

An SR-22 is a certificate of financial responsibility filed by your insurer with the state. It proves you carry the minimum required auto insurance. Florida may require it for certain license reinstatements.

What is an FR-44?

An FR-44 is similar but carries higher liability limits. Florida typically requires FR-44 insurance for DUI-related reinstatements, including many hardship licenses.

How to Obtain It

Contact a Florida-licensed insurance provider. Not all companies offer FR-44 filings, so ask upfront. You will usually pay a filing fee plus higher premiums for the required term.

How Long It Lasts

FR-44 and SR-22 requirements generally last three years, but your court order or DHSMV notice will specify the exact period. Maintain continuous coverage; a lapse can reset the clock or revoke your license.
