Customer Support FAQs for Ignition Interlock Devices
Getting Started & Daily Use
How do I turn on the BDI-747 device?
Turn the ignition key to the ON position (do not start the vehicle), then press and hold the middle button until the right light turns blue and stays on.
How do I start my vehicle with the BDI-747?
After turning the device on, wait until the screen says “Test required, Please Provide Breath Sample.” Insert the mouthpiece, take a deep breath, and blow steadily until you hear a click.
What does “LINK ON” mean?
“LINK ON” confirms that the handset is properly connected to the vehicle system.
If it does not appear, turn the key OFF, then back to ON.
How long do I have to start my vehicle after passing a test?
You have 2 minutes to start your vehicle after receiving a “Test Passed” message.
Can I disconnect the handset?
Yes. It is recommended to remove the handset when exiting the vehicle to reduce warm-up time and prevent theft. Always wait until the device powers down first.
Breath Tests & Retests
What happens if I don’t blow hard enough?
The device may display “Blow test error, Please try again.”
This means the breath sample was not strong or long enough. You may try again immediately.
What happens if I fail a breath test?
If the screen shows “Test Failed,” the system will reset and allow additional attempts based on your state’s rules. Too many failed attempts may result in a temporary lockout.
What are rolling retests?
Rolling retests are random breath tests required while driving. The device will beep and display a countdown timer prompting you to provide another breath sample.
Will the device shut off my vehicle if I miss a rolling retest?
No. The BDI-747 will not turn off your vehicle, but the horn may sound and headlights may flash until the vehicle is stopped.
What should I do when a rolling retest is requested?
It is recommended that you safely pull over, complete the test, and then continue driving.
Can I eat or use mouthwash before a breath test?
Wait at least 15 minutes after eating or using products containing alcohol (such as mouthwash) before testing.
Service, Lockouts & Violations
How do I know when my next service appointment is?
The device displays your next service date every time it prepares for a test. Visit the BEST Lab website for more detail.
What happens if I miss a service appointment?
Missing service may cause the device to enter stop service mode, which will prevent you from starting your vehicle.
What events can cause a violation?
Violations may occur if you:
Attempt to start the vehicle without a breath test
Fail or miss a rolling retest
Disconnect the battery repeatedly
Have too many failed breath tests
What is an early service recall?
An early service recall requires you to have the device serviced within 5 days to avoid a lockout.
